Detailed Hands-On Testing Review

Design

Encased in brushed 304 stainless steel, the Barista Express Impress looks and feels like a miniature commercial machine. The front dial and LED tamp gauge provide instant feedback.

Ease of use

Pulling the tamp lever down applies exactly 10kg of pressure with an automated 7-degree twist. If the green smile lights up, your dose is calibrated. If not, one press adds or subtracts a dose slice.

Coffee quality

Extraction is rich, sweet, and syrupy. The low-pressure pre-infusion gently blooms the puck before ramping to 9 bar, delivering exceptional clarity from light and medium roasts.

Milk performance

The single-hole steam wand has plenty of velocity. With the supplied stainless milk jug, you can stretch and texturise glossy microfoam in under 40 seconds.

Cleaning

Includes a clean-me indicator and silicone backflush disc. The drip tray features an empty-me mechanical pop-up flag.

Noise

The integrated conical burr grinder is audible but solidly dampened by the heavy metal body.

Running cost

Minimal ongoing maintenance costs; uses standard 54mm group seals and Sage water filters.

Who Should Buy It

  • Coffee lovers who want true café-grade espresso and authentic latte art
  • Those who want the tactile joy of an espresso machine without the mess of tamping
  • Home baristas looking for a reliable, all-in-one grinder and machine unit

Who Should Avoid It

  • Anyone who wants one-touch automated milk drinks before rushing out the door
  • Kitchens with low overhanging cupboards (tamper lever needs overhead clearance)
